Chicagoans should prepare for anything weather-wise on Tuesday as meteorologists track storms beginning to develop to the west.

People should expect multiple rounds of thunderstorms, with the most severe — capable of delivering destructive hail and damaging winds — set to hit between 5 p.m. and midnight.

In an updated forecast issued Tuesday afternoon, the Chicago office of the National Weather Service warned of “torrential” rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour, creating a threat of flooding in urban and low-lying areas.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has issued an “overflow action alert,” asking people to conserve household water use such as running dishwashers in order to free up pipes to handle stormwater.

A tornado watch has been issued through 10 p.m. for parts of far northeastern Illinois.

Volatile conditions remain in the forecast through the weekend, with severe thunderstorms also possible Friday into Saturday.
